CANMET-MTL | McMaster Innovation Park

CANMET-MTL

CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory will relocate to the McMaster Innovation Park, bringing new opportunities for established industries and developing enterprises.

The CANMET-MTL is dedicated to metals and materials fabrication, processing and evaluation.

Building is nearing completion and projecting occupancy fall, 2010. More than 100 of Canada’s best materials scientists and staff are moving from Ottawa to MIP. The project’s partners are expected to have invested a total of $60 million by the time the facility is operational.

CANMET-MTL has a special academic user program that allows its facilities to be made available to all Canadian university researchers. The program, supported by a major facilities access grant from the Natural Sciences Engineering Research Council, was spearheaded by professors at McMaster University.

The building will accommodate approximately 75% lab and 25% office functions.  The labs will be housed in high bay, mid bay and low bay spaces (12m, 8m and 4m floor to floor heights respectively).  High and mid bay labs are industrial in character and include casting, metal forming, mechanical testing and welding labs.  Most of these lab types have bridge cranes with capacities ranging from one ton to ten tons.  Low bay labs include material characterization and imaging, industrial radiography and other non-destructive testing labs, analytical testing labs, materials and processes development, corrosion, hydrogen sulphide high pressure labs and computer modeling labs.  Labs have specialized requirements ranging from isolation slabs, radiation shielding, high temperature processing of flammable metals, and explosion venting with approximately 25 fumehoods including two perchloric fumehoods and process exhaust extraction systems.

PROJECT STATUS: Excavation began in January of 2009, construction is underway and the building will be complete by the fall of 2010.

CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory (CANMET-MTL) http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/canmet-mtl will be hiring scientific and technical personnel in several key areas.  Job opportunities are advertised on the Public Service Commission of Canada jobs site (http://jobs-emplois.gc.ca/).  These positions are open to persons residing in Canada and Canadian citizens residing abroad.  Preference will be given to qualified Canadian citizens:

The CANMET-MTL building will be approximately 15,400sm, three storeys high and will house the Federal Government Material Technology Laboratory (MTL).  The facility will support research activities in the materials development and performance evaluation including pilot scale casting, rolling, forming and welding, corrosion, mechanical testing and micro-structure evaluations.  The building is targeting LEED Canada NC Platinum Certification.

The lab support program will include machine shop, metal working, carpentry, electronics and electrical shops, emergency response team room, shower/change facility, shipping receiving, oil, chemical and flammable storage facilities.

Office and support space will include open concept offices, private offices, meeting rooms, Quiet rooms, copy rooms, mailroom and record storage.  Program support spaces will include the MTL library, Non Destructive Testing administrative suite, display area, photo studio suite, server room, atrium and kitchenettes.
