Plans
The McMaster Innovation Park's planning principles are to build:
- A collaborative and collegial environment for academic, government and industry research and development
- An urban neighbourhood to facilitate interaction, creativity and innovation
- A neighbourhood including mixed uses connected to the City, the University and the region
- A model of sustainable design for buildings, landscape and infrastructure
- A built form to facilitate flexible programs and configuration
- A built form of low to mid-rise buildings to maximize collegial connection
- Integrated urban pedestrian and vehicular circulation
- Greenspace links connecting the site to larger water and openspace networks
- Site infrastructure to accommodate both short-term and long-term phasing requirements
- Parking distributed across the park in defined 'paddocks'
- Landscape and streetscape elements to reinforce the identity of the park and buildings
- A site design to establish and maintain a high level of visibility within the City and the region
- A clear phasing plan
- Clear identity and address for each occupant
- An accessible, safe and secure environment
In order to facilitate these goals, Diamond and Schmitt Architects has developed a campus master plan that provides over 1.7 million square feet of office, research and amenity space for the envisioned 3,000 park occupants. The plan incorporates state-of-the-art LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings, sustainable landscape infrastructures (including storm water management) and open spaces that will become a landmark in the city. It will be a bicycle-friendly, traffic-calmed, twenty-four hour, seven-day community with pedestrian connectivity access to natural amenities. It will be a place to work and play while encouraging interaction and creativity.
The site plans below are draft versions of McMaster Univeristy's vision of the McMaster Innovation Park. These plans were displayed at the MIP community open house on January 10, 2006.
